ECLIPSE SEASON: The next lunation on the calendar, a New Moon on October 25, is also a partial solar eclipse. In my way of calculating such things (other astrologers may have differing opinions), as of today's Full Moon (on Sunday, October 9), we are now entering eclipse season.

In these next two weeks leading up to the eclipse, it is especially important to clear, cleanse, detox, release ... all those practices we would normally consider helpful during the waning phase of the lunar cycle. However, eclipses carry a much deeper symbolism than "standard issue" lunations, since they invoke larger karmic themes, for each of us individually and for the collective. They also mark the completion of a six-month period that began with the last set of eclipses, back in April and May.

I'll be writing much more about both the partial solar eclipse in Scorpio and the total lunar eclipse in Taurus (on November 8) in the next few Journals. In preparation for those events, we can benefit by simplifying our lives, establishing good routines to help us stay grounded and calm, and building a practice of gratitude for all the small blessings and miracles we experience every day.

ELEPHANT NOTES: If you've been reading this Journal for a while, you will remember my posting in May about two elephants, mother and daughter, who were rescued and brought to Elephant Sanctuary Brazil. It is with deep sadness that I report that Pocha, the mother, passed away earlier this week. In spite of feeling heartbroken that she was not able to enjoy her freedom for a longer time, it is good to know that her last five months were filled with joy. And, she was able to depart this physical life knowing that her daughter Guillermina is at Sanctuary and is being cared for and supported by the other elephants, her new herd and family. If you'd like to read more about Pocha, please visit her memorial page on the Global Sanctuary for Elephants website: globalelephants.org/in-loving-memory-of-pocha

THIS WEEK'S DAILY ASPECTS: Here are this week's important planetary aspects, along with my brief interpretations of each. I am including the Moon's hard aspects to Saturn, Uranus, Pluto, and Eris since the Moon can act as a "trigger" for the energies of the longer-term Saturn-Uranus and Pluto-Eris squares.

Monday
Venus opposite Chiron: Relationship wounds may surface today, as people are especially sensitive, feeling that their rights and needs are not being respected.
Moon in Aries conjunct Eris and square Pluto: Resentments and anger are possible as individual needs clash with societal laws and controls.
Mercury enters Libra: Mercury will be in Libra from October 10 to 29. During these short weeks, there is an emphasis on diplomacy and collaboration as we seek to create harmony through words. We may also be thinking more about relationships themes, and questions of justice and fairness. It can be more difficult to make clear decisions with Mercury in Libra, since the sign of The Scales can readily see both sides of an issue.

Tuesday
Sun quincunx Uranus and trine Saturn: Attitude adjustments may be needed today if we have become too focused on who is "right" and who is "wrong." As we break down the judgments that have kept us separate, we are more able to build consensus and find solutions.
Mars square Neptune: Our sense of direction may not be very accurate today. An underlying uncertainty or confusion can keep us from knowing what actions to take. It may be best to delay concrete decisions for a couple of days, until this influence has passed.
Moon in Taurus conjunct Uranus and square Saturn: Surprising developments or sudden events can trigger a fear response if we try to resist the changes that are occurring.

Wednesday
Mercury opposite Jupiter and sesquiquadrate Uranus: The mind is working overtime today and there is a great deal of nervous energy afloat. Remember to breathe and to be flexible as winds of change move through.

Thursday
Venus quincunx Uranus and trine Saturn: There is a need to be flexible in relationships, but we are able to draw upon patience and maturity in our interactions.
Mercury sesquiquadrate Saturn: Serious conversations compel us to look at issues in a new way, once we rise above our initial discomfort and resistance.

Friday & Saturday
No major aspects are exact on these two days.

Sunday
Sun quincunx Neptune: We may have lower energy today, or have trouble focusing. It is best to adjust our expectations of self and others, and to be aware of relationships in which we play either victim or martyr roles.

IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK: Venus themes of relationships, values, and finances are highlighted in your experience this year. With courage and discipline, you are able to make good progress in these areas. However, certain influences or events may trigger deep-seated anger or resentment, especially if you have not yet learned to balance the needs of self and other. If this occurs, remember that the feelings, while honest, may also be taken to an extreme. Take action as needed, but be aware of a tendency to throw the baby out with the bath water. (Solar Return Sun conjunct Venus, trine Mars, trine Saturn, square Pluto, opposite Eris)
