Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self.

This week we look at connecting with others in communities, whether in work settings, with our neighbors, or with the community of life within our own body. All these relationships are important and need our attention and care.

For changes to take place on this planet we call home, we must come together in community. Whether that community is your neighborhood, your town, your country, or segments within those geographical areas. The changes that are needed require more than one person, they require a change of attitude, of perspective, and a merging of our visions for a better future.

Our ancestors lived in community. They knew the value of neighbors, of family, of a village "raising a child". It was not a world of each person for themselves, but a world where people realized that they needed each other to survive and to thrive. Nothing has changed in that need. What has changed is our recognition of the importance of togetherness, deep communication (not just Tweets and posts), and the importance of compassionately helping our neighbor, whether they live next door or on the other side of the planet.

While our modern existence, with cities and cars and technology, encourages separation, we need to break our tendency to separate from others whether physically or emotionally, and learn to recognize the oneness of our future. The future of the planet will affect us all, some sooner than others.

In community, energy and power grows exponentially. Together, we can make changes happen that we can't as one individual.
